Trip Highlights: Cycling through Mburo to Rwanda and gorilla tracking in Rwanda.

Day One: Entebbe - Lake Mburo

Arrive at Entebbe airport in the morning and transfer by road 275km via Kampala to the Lake Mburo National Park. After lunch and bike fitting, we will go on a late afternoon game drive through this small National Park with its thrilling rich population of wildlife. On return to the campsite by the lake, the hippos will probably be waiting for us.
Overnight at the Campsite by the lake. F/B.

Day Two: Lake Mburo National Park - Ndejja 54/89km

1219m - 1423m, highest point 1433m.

If road conditions allow, we will start the day early at the Western Ruiza gate, giving us a good chance to see more animals in this less visited area of the park. After 62km we will meet up with the bikes at Biharwe, and start riding west on the road. Whilst by no means flat, there are no large climbs to trouble us as we cross some marshy low-lying areas, skirting larger hills through small villages and smallholdings. Watch out for the dramatically horned Ankole cattle grazing in small herds. We overnight at the very simple Pan Africa Motel in the village of Ndeija after 54km. F/B.

If the Ruizi road is impassable, we shall leave the National Park from the main Sanga gate, and ride 13km on a gently undulating dirt road to the main road, a total of 89km to Ndeija. Overnight at Pan Afric Motel. F/B.

Day Three: Ndeija - Kabale 102km

1423m - 1800m, highest point 2012m

The first part is very similar to the previous day, with long rolling hills interspersed with low-lying marsh areas and open plains. After about 60km things change as we reach the hills and start to climb - the benefit being the spectacular views! Naturally, the White Horse Inn in Kabale is set above the town - one last little uphill to finish this long, hard day. Overnight at White Horse Inn. F/B.

Day Four: Kabale 65km, all dirt roads.

1800m - 1919m, highest point 2401m

Yesterday may have been the longest day; today is probably the hardest. We leave Kabale Town towards the gorgeous Lake Bunyonyi, with the small matter of a 470m climb over 10km in the way. Once again, views compensate as we ride over several more summits, past the remarkable local terraced fields with farming going on at impossible angles on the hillsides. The highest part of the ride takes us through bamboo forest and then down to the small town of Kisoro, set close to the volcanic peaks of the Virunga Mountains. Overnight at Kisoro Tourist Hotel. F/B.

Day Five: Kisoro - Ruhengeri 37km

1919m - 1809m, highest point 1950m.

The first 10km to the border are on dirt with mountains always on our right. At Cyanika, the most relaxed of border posts, we join the smooth tarmac of Rwanda (remembering to ride on the right). Gently sloping roads with far more cyclists take us to the Hotel Asoferwa near the park office in Ruhengeri, and a fond goodbye to our bikes. Overnight at Asoferwa Hotel (Kinigi guest house). F/B.

Day Six: Ruhengeri

Today’s the day! Go and see the gorillas, and return to the hotel for our celebratory meal in the evening. F/B. Overnight at Asoferwa Hotel (Kinigi guest house). F/B.

Day Seven: Ruhengeri - Entebbe

Transfer in the morning to Kisoro airstrip, and fly to Entebbe. This should be an amazing flight with great views over the mountains and Lake Victoria. In the afternoon the is an optional trip to the lake to see the chimpanzee sanctuary at Ngamba Island, or a visit to the Uganda Wildlife Education Center which cares for animals rescued from poachers and illegal traders. Overnight at the Golf View Inn, Entebbe. F/B.
